The Russia Journal: In search of seafood in Moscow

Although Josef Stalin once declared "Moscow is a port of five seas" - referring to the fact that one can reach five seas through the city's assorted waterways - the choice of seafood restaurants in the capital is rather modest. However, they are all different, ranging from exorbitantly expensive to bizarre spots oriented to a select clientele. For this review, LifeStyle selected 15 restaurants that, in our opinion, have very little in common with one another - other than serving seafood.

Porto Maltese
Without a doubt, they know how to prepare tasty seafood dishes at this place, and the fish is fresh. They either grill it or salt it. The grilled dishes are juicy, while the salted ones are a bit drier and spicy.

Other fish and seafood restaurants mentioned in article

A cozy miniature place with low ceilings and small tables covered with blue tablecloths. The nautical-style decor is limited to fishing nets ensnaring mermaids, seashells and underwater flowers. The menu is basically traditional Mediterranean, including fresh trout fillet and red mullet, Livorno-style.

Botik Petra (Peter the Great's Boat)
This new restaurant with a name that honors Peter the Great is located not far from Belorusskaya metro station. Its interior features a seafaring theme, and there is also a huge wax statue of Peter the Great standing at the helm. We've heard the seafood here is quite good and, more importantly, inexpensive.

Zolotaya Rybka (Goldfish)
This restaurant really looks like a water reservoir. Goldfish are almost everywhere. In such a conceptual atmosphere, you just have to taste the French-style shark and sturgeon.

Izba Rybaka (Fisherman's Hut)
This affordable restaurant offers a fairly wide selection of seafood dishes. Specialties include the Izba Rybaka salad of various tasty kinds of fish, the Kastryulka Rybaka (mussels and shrimp on a bed of saffron sauce with rice) and trout baked in pastry.

Captain Nemo
This place, with its European interior, isn't too close to the center, but the menu, though reasonably priced, has plenty of seafood dishes. The menu features a starter of smoked Volga River fish (for two) and a potpourri of raw Atlantic fish under two different sauces.

Cutty Sark
Cutty Sark is not only a famous ship and an even more famous Scotch, but also a trendy seafood restaurant located in the heart of the city. Its specialty is flambe of seafood and fresh oysters. However, it could hardly be classified as a clam shack - its New England lobster and grilled swordfish are far from cheap.

This Mediterranean restaurant, located on Teatralnaya Pl., features mainly French and Italian cuisine, with a focus on seafood. You might have already guessed that O'mar's specialty (O'mar means "lobster" in Russian) is O'mar salad of lobster on a bed of fresh tomatoes, clams and shrimp.

Porto Maltese
Without a doubt, they know how to prepare tasty seafood dishes at this place, and the fish is fresh. They either grill it or salt it. The grilled dishes are juicy, while the salted ones are a bit drier and spicy.

Prichal Torpednykh Katerov (Torpedo Boat Berth)
This is an amazing floating restaurant. The menu is dominated by seafood dishes, including calamari, clam, cuttlefish and other sea delicacies.

Rybatskaya Derevnya (Fisherman's Village)
This is more than just a restaurant; it's also a beautifully landscaped place where you can not only eat, but try and catch a fish as well. The restaurant's big draw is freshly caught fish - sturgeon and rainbow trout.

This is one of the city's oldest seafood restaurants; in fact, it recently celebrated its 10th anniversary in business. We hear Sirena is especially good for business meetings and networking. The highlight is its banquet room with a gigantic aquarium under the floor. Yes, it's under the floor: You sit, eat and watch sturgeon and carp swimming under your feet!

The hit of this season is the restaurant's traditional baked potatoes with tender Gravlax (salt- and sugar-cured salmon) on a bed of mustard sauce and dill. Also worth trying is the beautiful Caesar salad with crawfish tails, which is served in lavish portions.

Spasatelny Krug (Life Preserver)
In addition to its traditional gray mullet, this tavern offers a dozen or so sea and river fish that are prepared on-site at the place's own smokehouse.

This restaurant is truly versatile, offering Italian, French, Greek and North African dishes. For those who want to try something unusual, there is hammerhead shark, grilled clam and monkfish wrapped in sliced bacon.

Yakor (Anchor)
This is a classic seafood restaurant located inside the Sheraton Palace Hotel. In addition to the specialty of the house, Yakor, you can choose a live lobster from the aquarium, order a fried Scottish salmon fillet or a whole trout. Alternatively, you can pick up something from the special meat menu. Fresh seafood and fishes on offer are displayed on ice.
